Jason Cruz

is an American multidisciplinary artist, painter, musician, and author whose creative identity was forged in the sun-bleached grit of Southern California. Best known as the longtime frontman and lyricist for the seminal punk band Strung Out—which he founded in his late teens—Cruz traded an early art scholarship for the road, building a three-decade career defined by restless creative output across music, poetry, and visual art. In addition to Strung Out and his roots-Americana project Jason Cruz and Howl, he has continually maintained a dedicated studio practice under the moniker ‘Amerikan Blackheart.’

Rooted in 1980s Venice skate culture, tattoo flash, and graffiti, Cruz’s visual art bridges raw street energy with deep narrative lyricism. Following a two-year tattoo apprenticeship, he gravitated toward oil painting, graphic design, and mixed media. His aesthetic pulls from an eclectic tapestry of mid-century pulp art—particularly the illustrations of Robert McGinnis—alongside the raw expression of Jean-Michel Basquiat, the sculptural intensity of Lee Bontecou, desert landscapes, and dirt-road swap meets.

Cruz’s paintings have been exhibited in galleries across Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Tokyo. Extending his storytelling onto the page, he is also the author and illustrator behind the children's book series launched with There Are Such Things as in Your Dreams, approaching visual narrative with the same rhythmic, emotive cadence found in his songwriting. Today, he continues to paint, write, and record out of Southern California.
